AN EVENING WITH BEVERLEY LUFF LIN- MOVIE REVIEW

Updated: Feb 19, 2021

"An Evening with Beverley Luff Lin" directed by Jim Hosking is an offbeat, introspective comedic drama. Set in a small desolate town, the story follows a couple abruptly after their marriage ends. Illusions and tricks shortly follow Lulu Danger (Aubrey Plaza) as she goes on the run from her marriage. While staying in the Moorhouse Hotel she faces her perceived notions on love, marriage, idealization, and her identity.

With the help of Colin Keith Three (Jermaine Clement), Lulu attempts to reconnect with an ex lover. The characters all fight for one another's love and time. Behaving quite like dogs scrapping over the last piece of food. This movie is not for everyone however, the dialogue can be offensive and satirical often to exaggerate qualities of the characters. I find Lulu to pose as the narrator driving the plot, exposing how each character treats one another and deepening the connection. A mashup of the seventies, eighties and today, this campy bizarre tale touches on falling out of love, abandonment, communication and the different forms of love.
